How to Play Spoons Card Game? – Rules & Strategies

Spoons aren’t just cutlery (and to some a musical instrument) it’s also a classic card game! But how do you play Spoons and what is it all about?

Well, that is exactly what we’ll be exploring in this guide.

The first thing you need to know about Spoons is that it is a very unique card game.

Not many other card games can say you also need a set of spoons to play it, can they?

So, let’s take a more in-depth look at Spoons and see how you play.

What Is Spoons?

how to play spoons

Spoons is a fast-paced card game that is a classic choice for parties, family get-togethers, and much more.

You might have memories of playing Spoons when you were a child but if you can’t remember the rules don’t worry, because we will be looking at everything you need to know.

One of the great things about Spoons is that it’s often a very speedy game.

So, if you’re looking for a quick card game to play with friends whether at home or down at the pub it is a great choice.

How To Play Spoons

Spoons doesn’t really have a fixed player limit. While it could feasibly be played with two people, it is definitely better suited for groups.

Around 4 to 6 people are undoubtedly the sweet spot when it comes to the number of players.

You also need a regular deck of 52 cards, and like I mentioned earlier, some spoons.

Any kind of spoons will do, although it’s best to get a matching set to make things easier.

The number of spoons you need will be one less than the total number of players. So, if you have 5 players, you’ll need 4 spoons.

The Play

So, now you know what you need let’s take a look at Spoons rules you need to know when it comes to playing this card game.

The objective of Spoons is to get 4 of a kind but you also need to get one of the spoons as well.

To play Spoons you first need to set-up the spoons in a small circle at the center of the table and then each player is dealt 4 cards.

The dealer/ lead player then takes a card from their deck and adds it to their hand. They then must choose one card to give to the player on their left.

Each player continues this movement with the group’s final player adding their removed card to a trash pile in the center.

This continues till one player gets 4 of a kind in their hand.

Once they do they can take a spoon and once this happens, the other players must dash to take a spoon from the center as well.

You can’t remove a spoon from the center before having 4 of a kind, but only one player needs to do this.

The player left without a spoon must then mark down a letter (or remember it). This will be S at first.

The game then starts afresh from the beginning, with the deck being reshuffled.

Each round continues till a player loses 5 rounds collecting letters as they go to spell spoon.

Once you have spelled spoon, you are out of the game.

Variations

There are a lot of variations to Spoons.

You can choose to ignore the letter collecting entirely and simply have the player who doesn’t get a spoon be eliminated. Then remove one spoon for each subsequent round til only one player remains.

This will make the game much faster and is a great way to play Spoons if you are playing with a large group of people.

This variation is also great if you’re looking for a fun party game

You can also opt to change the number of rounds needed to be eliminated as well. Rather than spelling spoon, players could have a set amount of lives that they lose if they are unable to collect a spoon.

Aside from the gameplay rules, you should also agree upon where players can keep their hands.

You won’t want players with their hands right next to spoons, so make sure you set an agreed-upon distance before playing.

Strategies

Spoons might seem like a fast and frantic game with little room for strategy and tactical play.

But like many similar card games, there is a lot of room for strategy, and the simplicity hides very in-depth gameplay.

One of the best ways to play Spoons won’t win you the game but it could easily carry you to the last round.

You simply don’t bother to look at your cards at all; instead, simply keep your attention focused on the circle of spoons in the center.

Once another player goes to grab one you will be ready to make your move.

Of course, when you get to the final round you’ll need to start paying attention to your hand.

Another is to be sneaky if you have 4 of a kind, then you can try to be subtle when taking a spoon.

This can lead to mass panic when the other players realize they can get one as well.

Whatever you do, try to always remain focused on the circle of spoons and have your hands ready to grab one.

Don’t be afraid to be sneaky and try and distract opponents with some small talk or jokes. Yes, it’s a little dirty but if you want to win this strategy could help. After all, it’s no different from distracting the banker while playing Monopoly is it?

Finally, there is always bluffing, and this is much easier than it would be in a game of Poker.

You can reach for the Spoons at any time you just can’t touch them.

If you can make it look realistic, then you can bluff and go to get a spoon from the center. This could cause another player to panic and remove one, essentially eliminating them from that round/ the game.

Conclusion

So, that is everything you need to know about Spoons.

It’s a simple and very unique game but with plenty of room for personalization.

Whether you want to play with the classic rules or add your own twist to it Spoons will surely be a hit at your next game night.

For a simple, fast-paced game, Spoons does certainly have a lot of room for clever strategy.

So, if you are looking out for card games to add to your next game night, Spoons could be a great choice!
