You might expect a game called Wizard Staff to be something like Dungeons and Dragons. But make no mistake, this is a drinking game and quite a unique one too.
So, let’s look at how Wizard Staff is played.
What is The Wizard Staff Drinking Game?
Wizard Staff is a fantastic drinking game that stands out from the crowd. Drinking games like Beer Bong and Battle Shots are very popular, but if you’re getting bored of them, why not give this game a try instead?
Now let’s get one thing out of the way this game will probably get messy. So, we don’t recommend it for down at the pub. But it does make an excellent outdoor garden drinking game. The game is also quite simple when you get down to it.
The game is played individually, but you compete against the other players. Each player will drink a can of beer and then place their next can on top of the empty one and tape them together before drinking.
The idea is that the tower of cans will get taller over the course of the game. The tower of cans is the titular Wizard Staff, and to win the game, your “staff” needs to be the tallest at the end of the night!
While the game might sound easy, it can get tricky when you get to three or four cans.
But it won’t just be physically challenging as you’ll be getting drunker as you play. If your staff breaks or if it drops, you’re out of the game.
Or you could try to start again from the beginning. It is best played over a long night/day and makes an excellent endurance-style drinking game. While these are the basic rules for the drinking game, there are a few special rule variations you can use.
These add a fun “play fight” element to the game to decide who the wisest wizard is! So, if you don’t want to play with the standard rules, you have opportunities to customize the game to make it more fun! Before we look at the rules, let’s take a quick look at what you’ll need to play.
What You’ll Need to Play?
Well, you won’t need much to play the Wizard Staff drinking game. All you need is some strong tape and plenty of cans of alcohol. For most people, this will be beer, but you can get other alcoholic beverages in cans.
You’ll also need plenty of room to play the game, which is why we think it works best as an outdoor game for adults. Like all drinking games, remember, though, you need to play safe and try not to drink too much.
Rules and Gameplay
The Aim of The Game
Like all our favorite drinking games, the aim of Wizard Staff is to simply have fun! But, of course, if you are more competitively minded, you’ll want to win the game, which means you’ll need to drink the most to get the tallest staff.
We’ll also look at some of the other rules you can use below. The aim of the game is the same, but to win, you’ll also need to break other players’ staff. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at how you play this drinking game.
The Set-Up
Wizard staff makes a great three-player drinking game but could easily be played with two people or even many more. Just make sure you have enough cans to go around. Don’t forget to put the tape out as well!
Get everyone seated, and then have one player announce the game start. Once the game begins, get ready to drink!
Playing Wizard Staff
Once you have finished downing a can, you should take another but before opening it, place it on top of the empty can. Then tape the two cans together before drinking. You repeat this process for the next can and so on.
The taller your staff gets, the more challenging it will be to drink from! Not to mention the drunker you’ll get. At the end of the game, the player with the tallest staff is named the wisest Wizard, and they win the game, or do they?
If you are playing with the standard rules, the game is over at the end of the night/day, and both the staffs are compared. However, you can add a more “combative element” to the game. So, let’s look at how these special rules work.
White Wizard Rules
The white wizard rules are a bit different. With these rules, each player will need first to drink an agreed-upon number of cans. This is usually ten cans each, but it can be lower if you prefer; we think five works as a good starter amount.
Once each player has drunk their cans, they battle with their staff. Think of this like a sword fight or even a Star Wars-style lightsaber battle! Whoever’s staff breaks first will lose, and the winner will be dubbed the new White Wizard.
Wise Rules
Another fun twist in this game is the wise rules. The game is played in much the same way with these rules, but players can’t say they are drunk or any other similar variation of the word. They must say they are “feeling wise” instead.
If a player does say they are drunk at any point, they will need to down a penalty can. They also can’t add this can to their staff. These rules might sound easy enough, but it’s easy to slip up as you drink more.
Wizard Staff – A Fun Physical Drinking Game
It is indeed a unique drinking game in many respects. It’s a fun physical drinking game that offers plenty of challenges and can even be customized with some fun rule variations. So, if you’re looking for a new drinking game to try, just go for it at least once.
