I have always been a lover of the popular board game Sorry! I’ve been playing it since childhood, though I know it’s been around way before my time. In fact, it’s actually based on a historical board game dating back to the 1920s.
So, I was made up when I learned that I could now play one of my childhood favorites anywhere by simply downloading and playing online.
Okay, so nothing quite beats a class board game, does it? At least, I don’t think so.
However, Sorry! Online comes about as close to the original as you’ll get on a screen. Plus, you’ve got the added convenience of playing with not just your family and friends but the entire world. Pretty cool, huh?
So, in this guide, we’re going to look at what new adaptations have been added to Sorry! And what makes it an accessible electronic version and a favored choice with board game fans around the globe?
How To Play Sorry! The Online Board Game
Playing Sorry Online is a total breeze, even if you tag yourself as a bit technically challenged.
To begin, you’ll need to get ready to play by downloading the game onto any compatible device, such as a smartphone or tablet. Or you can play the game directly online.
Once you’ve done that, try to familiarize yourself with the game by having a couple of practice runs.
The good thing is that the rules stay true to those of the original board game, so if you’re a fan of the old classic, you’ll have qualms getting your head around the modern version.
Rules And Board Game
The objective remains the same as the original Sorry! Basically, you need to be the first person to have all your tokens at their home base.
Each player takes turns rolling the dice to move around the board. However, a few tricks along the way can either mean you’re stuck at the starting point or get sent back by one of your opponents.
For example, if you land on one of the duplicate squares as your opponents, they must send that piece back to the starting point, and their token cannot be rereleased until they roll a six.
This rule of six goes for starting the game. You can’t put any tokens onto the track until you’ve thrown a six; only then can you join the game. Something which can be pretty frustrating as you watch your opponents glide closer to the finishing point.
By the end of the game, you will need to have all four tokens in the home-base section of the board, which is marked by the same color as your token and starting point.
There is also an additional rule that some online game versions allow, such as the rule where you can split one roll between two tokens. This can be a strategic move if you want to banish one of your opponents back to the start while progressing another token toward the finish line.
Advantages of Sorry Online
While I think most of us can admit nothing quite hits home like the nostalgia of an original board game, some advantages mean sometimes an online version is more appealing.
For one, you don’t have to store the game, which means a clutter-free living space. Secondly, no more trying to keep track of small parts and components that tend to roll under the couch or get lost by the kids.
It also broadens your horizons regarding who you’re playing with. You can choose whether to play with friends and family or other game lovers from anywhere worldwide, which is one of my biggest highlights.
There is also the immersive factor. By this, I mean the melodic soundscapes accompanying the game, the vibrant colors, and enhanced visuals and animations.
Strategies And Tips For Success
I’ve spent many years playing this game and others like it, such as Ludo. So, with all my experience, I’ve managed to pick up some pretty handy tips to give me an advantage, and I’m going to share them with you to provide you with the upper hand during your next game.
Token Movement
Don’t rush into your moves. Look around the board after every dice roll and carefully plan your next move. See if you can split the move between two tokens, send an opponent back to the beginning to give you a head start, or allow yourself to overtake where possible.
The Sorry Card
Use the sorry card wisely. This can be used against your opponents at the most crucial parts of the game, giving you a better chance of beating them to the finish line.
Observation
Keep a close eye on your opponent’s movements, try to figure out their next move, and obstruct them wherever possible by bumping them or sending them back to the start.
Special Rules of Sorry
It’s not all just as simple as roll and moves because each number you roll can represent a different action. Below is a list of what each potential role means:
- Move your token out from the start circle or one space forward.
- Move your token off the start circle or two spaces forward. (You can also draw another card at the end of your turn.)
- Move three spaces forward.
- Move four spaces forward.
- Move five spaces forward.
- Move seven spaces forward (can be split between two pawns, but not used to move a token out of the start circle).
- Move a pawn eight spaces forward.
- Move a pawn ten spaces forward or one space backward (if unable to move ten spaces).
- Move a pawn 11 spaces forward or switch places with one of your opponent’s pawns (if unable to move 11 holes).
- Move a pawn 12 spaces forward.
- Sorry! – Move a pawn from the start circle to a square occupied by your opponent’s pawn, sending their pawn back to their start circle. (If no pawns are in your start circle, forfeit your turn.)
